Water, water all around and not a drop to drink! We hope this will never happen to you while sailing. Watermakers have made a huge difference to modern cruising, but they are not the full story when managing potable water onboard. These products contribute to a smooth-running, healthy, fresh water system.
Jabsco Par-Max– Heavy Duty models include a wider diameter motor in configurations up to 6 GPM (23 LPM) and 60 PSI (4.1 BAR), that deliver exceptional performance. Standard models provide good performance in an economical footprint and are available in 1-3 GPM, perfect for vessels with 1-3 outlets.
Fitted close to the pump discharge, an accumulator tank acts as a pressure buffer, absorbing flow from the pump when demand is low and smoothing the outlet pressure. It extends pump life, reduces battery drain and can be fine-tuned to the cut-in pressure of the pump.
Shurflo Aqua King II Fresh Water Pumps are designed for boats with multi-fixtures. A built-in mechanical bypass function enables these pumps to vary the flow rate for any on demand condition, without the need for an accumulator.
Built to withstand the tough marine environment they can run dry without damage. Junior, Standard, Premium & Supreme (2, 3, 4 & 5 Gallons per Minute) models available.
Seaflo 35 – Positive displacement 3-chamber up to 1.8 GpM diaphragm pump. Self-priming up to 6 vertical feet, it can run dry without damage.
Seaflo 43 – 4-chamber diaphragm pump that matches the needs of a typical vessel with a shower, water heater and up to 3 faucets. Provides up to 3 GpM (11.3 LpM), with built-in pulsation dampening by-pass to control unwanted cycling and noise.
Seaflo 51, 53 & 55 – Heavy-duty, high-volume water pumps with 5-chamber diaphragms providing up to 5.0 GpM or more. Designed to run on water systems with no accumulator tank necessary, and up to 5 fixtures, they are also suited for use with a holding tank water system, as found in a boat, RV or remote cabin.
Watermaster Quickfit Automatic Pressure Pump:
Hand, foot, and toe pumps – allow you to pump water while holding on and provide essential back-up when electric power fails.
Compact, low-power inline booster pumps – fit unsupported into pipework and offer an effective way to upgrade from a manual pump system.
High-flow submersible pumps – are ideal for pumping from external water containers.
Plastimo high resistance flexible water tanks are a reliable, practical, and low-cost solution to freshwater storage on board. Light and form fitting, they can be installed where it would not be possible to install a rigid water tank, due to boat shape and difficult access. Double walled, with food grade PVC, the inner layer comes with fittings. Holding straps are built into top two corners. Sizes: 100, 120, 150 & 200 litre.
Vetusall purpose Atanks are made of seamless, thick-walled high grade linear polythene, rust free and less prone to condensation than a metal tank. Content level can be seen from outside for easy checking. This range is suitable for drinking water, wastewater, and regularly available diesel fuel up to an ambient temperature of 100 ºC. Sizes: 88, 170 & 215 litre.
Prolong the life of high-density polyethylene containers stored on deck with covers to protect them from sun exposure. Strap them down securely – so they don’t fly around in a gale. Securing them to a board or bar attached to firmly based stanchions is one option.
5 gallons is a good storage volume, but a heavy load to lug from afar or lift onto a deck. A folding dock cart and lifting sling can make things easier. When freeboard is high, and backs are sore, insert a submersible in-line pump into containers in the dinghy to lift water up to your deck water fill.
Isotemp Spa Water Heaters have 316-grade stainless steel inner tank and heating tubes. Polyurethane insulation prevents heat loss. Cupro-nickel 110/230 VAC heating elements have a long service life. High quality polypropylene outer casing increases insulation. Safety features include double thermostats and pressure relief valve.
Kuuma Premium Water Heaters are constructed of corrosion-resistant, marine-quality aluminum and heat water using electrical power or an integrated heat exchanger. Features include ignition protected controls, mounting tabs (front or side), mounting tabs and manual reset.
Raritan 1700 Series Water Heaters retrofit to most onboard pressure systems. Dense foam insulation provides longer heat retention than traditional fiberglass. The glass-lined steel tank is protected by a 75 PSI T&P (temperature and pressure) relief valve. The cylindrical design can withstand more pressure than a cube shaped tank.
Instant Trust Marine Water Purifier uses high frequency ultraviolet light to remove harmful micro-organisms, chemical residues, possible odours & odd flavours. Its UV lamp turns on only when the water pump is running. Instant Trust Tap-mounted Filter has a 3-step water flow selection lever: Unfiltered Straight / Unfiltered Shower / Purified.
Whale Aqua Source 4500 litre inline carbon filter removes unpleasant tastes and smells from in-board water tanks (including chlorine). It can be mounted vertically or horizontally and has an effective working life of about 12 months.
When collecting rainwater – first flush the collection surface, then filter water collected through a coarse and a fine filter and finally store it an isolated tank so as not to spread contaminants to other tanks. Avoid pipe kinks and low spots that could cause flow problems and stagnation within your collection system.
If in doubt about the purity of water, it can be disinfected by boiling for 5 minutes. Many sailors treat their tanks economically with chlorine: 5 to 8 eight drops of unscented liquid household bleach containing 5.25 – 8.25 percent chlorine will treat 1 gallon of water (approx. ½ – 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons). Before drinking, let it stand for a few hours. Periodically give your tanks a thorough scrub out and test the water for freshness.
