Altair from St.Barths championboat at the 2016 Budget Marine Wahoo Tournament

“Altair” from St. Barths, was crowned champion boat for 2016 after catching 15 wahoo over the weekend, totaling 528.2 lbs of wahoo caught.

This year’s event saw 20 participating boats in the 9th edition of the Budget Marine Wahoo tournament. Fishing teams traveled from Nevis, St.Kitts, Saba, St.Croix, St.Barths, Sint Martin and St.Maarten.

On day one of the competition fishing team “Altair” jumped out as the leader for the day with 11 wahoos caught, totaling 427.2 lbs of fish, second place was “Tahla’O” from St.Barths, Champion boat of last year’s Budget Marine Wahoo Tournament, with 9 wahoo, carrying a total of 281 lbs of wahoo.

Day 2 saw a few surprises, first boat to the scales was “Turn and Burn” from St. Croix with a total of 15 wahoo, after not being able to fish on day 1 due to engine failure. The top boats from day one had slow days and could not repeat their day 1 catches making the final results of the tournament that much closer than originally anticipated.

“Blue Crush” from Saba showed up to the docks with a whopping wahoo weighing in at 65.9 lbs, caught by their junior angler.

Best Junior Angler: Jamaal Klaber on ” Blue Crush” from Saba 46.9lbs Wahoo

Best Female Angler: Typhanie Bosseur on “Prowler” from St.Maarten

Largest Mahi mahi: Tahla’O from St. Barths 23.6 lbs.

Largest Tuna: Taotira from St.Barths 40.2 lbs

Largest Kingfish: Pinche Slow Pay from St. Kitts 24.2 lbs

4th Place/ Second largest wahoo: Tahla’O from St.Barths 60.8 lbs

3rd place/ Largest wahoo: Sea Hawk from St.Kitts 74.0 lbs

Level 2 ‘The Wahoo jackpot’ (a newly introduced category for 2016 and onwards)

2nd Place:

Tahla’O from St.Barths 503.1 lbs ; (15 wahoo total) outdueling Fishing vessel ‘Blue Crush’ from Saba by 0.50 lbs (also with 15 wahoo total) for 2ndplace overall.

Organizers of the event took the opportunity to sincerely thank their sponsors, and participating fishermen for making this 9thannual Budget Marine fishing tournament such a huge success, and one of the greatest so far.

Organizers’ also quickly pointed to next year’s event which will be their 10th annual wahoo tournament, and have all intentions to again heighten the steaks and prizes for another great fishing competition.
