This is a Trailer brake light switch. The internal electrical circuit is completely disconnected (“open”) when the switch is at rest. When you step on the brakes, a mechanical cable or spring pulls the switch’s pin out, completing the circuit (“closing” it) and sending power directly to your trailer brake lights.  Because boat trailers are frequently backed into saltwater or freshwater, this specific HELLA model includes a protective splash cap to prevent the electrical terminals from corroding.
